BREAKING: ASUU strike suspended after 242 days

ASUU strike: The industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of the University (ASUU) has been conditionally suspended after 242 days.

The union decided to suspend the strike during a meeting of its leadership that started on Thursday night and lasted into the early hours of Friday, October 14, 2022.

The meeting was called by the union to determine its next line of action after its state branches met over the Court of Appeal ruling last week.

The Court of Appeal had ordered ASUU to suspend the strike before its appeal of the ruling ordering lecturers to resume work can be heard.

Members of the union’s National Executive Committee, which comprises the chairmen of the state chapters and members of the national executive, attended the meeting at the ASUU National Secretariat in Abuja.

ASUU has shut down public universities in the country on February 14, 2022, to demand full implementation of agreements it had entered into with the Federal Government a few years ago.

The union is demanding the release of revitalisation funds for universities, renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, release of earned allowances for university lecturers, and deployment of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) against the IPPIS.

The government after several insistence days ago reportedly agreed to modify the IPPIS in other to meet ASUU demands.

“The lecturers were told that the IPPIS will be modified to accommodate the peculiarities of UTAS. It will be too expensive to run two payment platforms concurrently,” a source who did not want his name in print explained.
